This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 30 minutes of your time.

We'll take the previous year's spreadsheet, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's Jurors List.

1930 Jurors List

[The list has been typed up by volunteers: David, Grace, Kathryn, and wingcli2015. Please help us type up the lists from other years - it takes less than 30 minutes to finish a page. Click here for details.]

Major K. Hussain & Major D.C. Lightbody

I am hoping to learn more about two military officers who were posted to Hong Kong from late 1945 to 1947.  They both played a role in the postwar recovery of the remains of American airmen killed during raids on Hong Kong.

1.) Major K. Hussain: He was a member of the War Crimes Investigation Unit.  Anyone know his full name and whether his last name is spelled correctly?  Was he Royal Army?

Kialung Wan Cemetery, Victoria Mortuary, and the HK Death & Birth Registration Bureau

I've been reading some archival documents circa 1946 and have been left with a few questions that I hope Gwulo readers can help me with.

1.) Kialung Wan Cemetery: Where is (or was) this cemetery in Hong Kong?  Does it still exist and has its name changed?  Are there alternate spellings of "Kialung Wan"?

2.) Victoria Mortuary: Was this in Kennedy Town in 1946?  Was "Victoria Mortuary" the official name?

Dates for your diary

20th June - HK - Gwulo talk #1. I'll present the first talk to members of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), but non-members are also very welcome to attend. We'll use the JC Cube theatre at Tai Kwun, so I'm looking forward to that as I haven't presented there before.
To check if you've seen this talk before, here are some of the photos I'll show. You can think of it as the live version of Volume 1 of my books.
Pre-booking is required for this event, via the online booking form on the RGS website. The event is also listed on the Tai Kwun website.
Hope to see you there!

2019-05 RTHK's Hong Kong Heritage - Gwulo Gubbins

Annemarie Evans invited me on to her radio show, Hong Kong Heritage, for a chat about what she's christened "Gwulo Gubbins". It sounds like someone from The Hobbit, but instead we chatted about some of the new photos in my latest talk, visiting the UK's National Archives, and other odds and ends - ie the gubbins.

Air Raids on Hong Kong in WW2

Beginning in October 1943, the US Army Air Forces and the US Navy started bombing Hong Kong and surround areas.  From some of the raids photos exist, mainly taken from US planes.

The following photos will start with an excerpt from R.E. Jones Wartime diary.

Talk #5: Hong Kong people

31st May update: The RAS have let me know they have full house for tomorrow's talk, so booking for this is now closed.

I’m putting the finishing touches to a new talk I’ll give this Saturday, June 1st. It’ll be great to see you there if you can join us. Please click here for details & booking.

Collage

The talk is based around old photos that show people in Hong Kong. I’ve gone through my collection, scanning copies of all the photos with a “people” theme. To help keep the numbers manageable I’ve only chosen photos taken in or before the 1940s. The collage above shows 50 of them, but there are about 160 in all.

Next followed several weeks spent juggling the photos, looking for the stories that link them together. Some are obvious choices, e.g. a series of street life scenes that includes my favourite in this talk,
