Views along the tram line in the 1900s

Join us for a ride on one of Hong Kong's new trams. Here's how The China Mail reported the first trial of the trams on July 2nd, 1904:

"To the clanging of the alarm-bell, and the whirling round of wheels, the first tram to run on the Hongkong tramway line left the shed last Saturday. [...] The cars used were the combination and the ordinary open car. In their new coats of paint, the colour of which is mainly yellow, relieved here and there with darker hues, the cars looked very well, [...] The motor men and ticket collectors are nattily dressed in white with narrow black facings, and attend daily at the sheds for instruction and trials."

I don't have any photos of the nattily dressed staff, but here's what those first trams looked like:

I'm not sure how long these all-first-class and all-third-class designs continued in use. Later reports describe a different design, where each tram had a mix of first- and third-class seating (maybe this is the "combination car" described in the newspaper report above?). However we do know that throughout the 1900s, all the trams were

2019-03 Hong Kong Economic Times article

Gwulo gets a mention in today's issue (22 March 2019) of the Hong Kong Economic Times. It's part of a larger article about the exhibition of old Hong Kong photos at The Pottinger Hotel, which opened yesterday. I curated the exhibition's photos, and provided the text for the captions, questions, and answers.

Godown 7 / First Kowloon Post Office

The first post office in Kowloon opened its doors in July 1898. It was located at Godown No. 7 of the Wharf and Godown's premises, on the harbourside of present day Canton Road.

Does anyone have details regarding the exact location of Godown No. 7 ?

Pokfulam Reservoir Road

When was the Pokfulam Reservoir Road been built. The one which leads up to the peak ? The Pokfulam Reservoir is the oldest Reservoir in Hong Kong, so that Road must be quite old.

Morover, when walking up that road there are bunkers on the right side. Are they from the Second World War ?

Thanks for your help. Kind regards, Daniel

Re-starting KCR services after WW2

In Cheng Po Hung's book, Hong Kong during the Japanese Occupation, he notes that trains started running again on the KCR line in February 1942, but that by 1944 trains only ran once every two days due to fuel shortages. (I guess that train services would have stopped completely by mid-1945 - has anyone seen this confirmed?)

So when the British returned, one of their jobs was to get the trains running again. They didn't waste any time, and the first train ran on the Sep 29, 1945 ... straight into a brick wall!

Handover of military areas to the HK Government

Construction of Harcourt Road

After the end of WW2, the military and naval premises were repaired from war damages and used further on. Mainly on Hong Kong Island, these areas were situated right in the centre of the developing city. Any expansion to the east was impeded by these areas, mainly in the aspect of traffic (i.e. motor vehicles).
