Andrew Johnston, engineer, born 1844

Interested in any information relating to my great-great grandfather, Andrew Johnston, as above.  He served his apprenticeship in Govan, Scotland, moved to China to work in 1867, subsequently moving to Hong Kong in 1875.  From 1875 - 1881 he was Manager of the West Point Foundry and Superintendent Engineer of the Cosmopolitan Dock Company.  From 1881 to 1886 he was Manager of the Lee Yuen Sugar Refinery (he is mentioned in Kaori Abe's book "Chinese Middlemen..", Routledge 2017).

Gwulo in 2019

Time for a look back at Gwulo's 2018, and ahead to the plans for 2019.

There weren't any major dramas in 2018, instead it was a year of steady growth. I've put the detailed figures at the bottom of the page for anyone who is interested, but here are a few highlights:

  • 245,000 unique visitors to the website in 2018
  • 2,737 subscribers to the weekly newsletter, up 32% from 2017
  • Over 2,800 new photos, places, people, etc. added, so the site now has over 34,000 pages in total

There is more than enough drama happening elsewhere in the world at the moment, so I'm happy that our little corner of the internet continues to thrive, remains free of spam and any worries of fake news, and has comments that are a pleasure to read.

To all of Gwulo's contributors, please give yourself a pat on the back. I look forward to reading what we all discover in 2019.

Best regards,

David

2018 Review of progress against plans

Last year's plans were split into four groups:

Yee Clun 余 坤 羨 [1881-1967] Chinese Settler In Canada

Yee Clun 余 坤 羨(1881-1967), Chinese settler in Canada who challenged an unjust law in court. Please visit the following sites for the story about Yee Clun as told by the Canadian researchers and recalled by his daughters.

Looking for information about:

  • Thomas LOUDON [c.1863-1889], a policeman from Scotland
  • Hung Chiu KAN [????-????] (& 30-32 Des Voeux Road Central in 1920s)
  • This photo shows Andrew Chan, who was with the BAAG in WW2. Can anyone recognise any other people, or the event? There's a Flying Tigers logo on the back wall.

Gwulo in London: Talk on Saturday, 30th March, 2019

I'll present talk #4 to the Friends of the RASHKB in London at the end of March. Non-members are very welcome to attend.

I'll use the projector to show a selection of old Hong Kong photos from my collection onscreen, and tell their stories. The photos have been scanned at high-resolution so I can zoom in to them during the talk and show you their hidden details.

This talk's photos and stories are grouped around four themes:

c.1950 Central from the harbour

We'll start the new year with a popular view - Victoria Harbour with a junk sailing by, and Hong Kong Island in the background.

Where: The photo shows buildings along Connaught Road in Central, and the hillsides beyond.

When: The buildings along Connaught Road were built in the 1890s and 1900s, on what was then newly-reclaimed land. When this photo was taken, most of those buildings were still standing, with one exception:

New on Gwulo: 2019, week 01

I've just learned that, according to the ISO standard, the first week of the year is the week that has the year's first Thursday. So despite the title above, it's still the 31st of December, and I'm writing our last roundup of what's new for 2018.

I hope you've enjoyed reading all the contributions to Gwulo over the last year, and wish you all the best for the new year ahead,

David

(If you're researching family history in Hong Kong, some excellent news is that cards in the Carl Smith Collection can now be viewed online. Thanks to Patricia for letting us know.)

Memories of:

Carl Smith Cards from PRO - now with Card images

Have I missed something and people have been celebrating this little Christmas present from the HK PRO for weeks? ... but they have had a revamp of their website recently, I think.  Nothing much new in terms of the general catalogue (the HKRS series and the like), but now, oh bliss, the Carl Smith index comes with a thumbnail of the card itself.  When clicked this comes up separately and can be made full screen or screenshot.  Both sides of the card are available when appropriate.

New link to access the Carl Smith Collection?

David, do you know the latest link to access the Carl Smith Collection at the PRO? The one that you gave in 2011 isn't working any more
