Tracing St Christophers and Captain Alan Roderick Williamson (Roddy)

I am trying to contact anyone who was in Hong Kong in the early 1960's who knew of St Christopher's Orphanage and/or my adoptive parents, Captain Alan Roderick Williamson (Roddy) and his wife Patricia Anne Williamson (Pat). I would like to receive any photos of them and/or with me as a baby.

Looking for Hong Kong expert

Hi, there,

I'm a writer who is looking for a local Hong Kong expert to provide a quote and/or information and/or cultural insight for an article I'm writing for an Internet site. I can't provide payment but I can tell you it's a very respected, well-known site. I can provide further details but it has to do with the funeral supply stores in the Sheung Wan area. If anyone happens to be in the funeral industry in HK that would be incredible.

Shanghaiese artist PANG c.1950

In 1960  I  bought a 36x24 inch oil painting of what I thought was a Chinese girl (she had an uncanny likeness to my new girlfriend and present wife!) though the owner on the shop on Observatory Road near Gun Club Barracks  told me the title was 'The Student' and the subject a Russian.

About ten years later an Artist named Pang was interviewed by the China Mail and that is how I discovered  the  pre 1949 Shanghai connection. If anyone has information on the artist I will  post a copy of my paintng for their information.

Lady May’s “Our Day” Rose Fund 1916

I came across a list of doners from the Hong Kong Muslim community to the above fund dated 23rd October 1916.

I am trying to find out what the event was.

The Victorian selfie

Though "selfie" is a modern word, sending photos of ourselves to friends is almost as old as photography itself. The photos below were taken in the photographic studios of Hong Kong in the mid- to late-1800s, and given to family and friends around the world.

I've added notes to the photos, but I'm hoping your detective skills can add more information. If you can identify military uniforms, I'll be especially interested to hear what you can tell us about the soldiers and sailors in the group. Please leave a comment below if you spot anything interesting.

c.1865 - Western man, by Kai Sack

c.1867 - Western man

The back of the card gives the photographer's name as "Kai-Sack", and his address as "Opposite Stag Hotel, 109 Queen's Road". The seller dates this to c.1867, but when I

Desertions, Awol and presumed dead

Did any of the soldiers at Hong Kong desert, go awol or were mistakenly declared dead?

Are there any comprehensive and lists of these men?  Where could I find them?

Royal Artillery in Hong Kong and Singapore 1940-42

Hi all,

I am interested in anything to do with the Royal Artillery in Hong Kong and Singapore from 1940 through to the Fall of Singapore in February 1942..

Fares - Tram and Ferry

I should know this but can't remember.

What were the upper and lower deck fares on the trams? Did childrem pay half fares? I presume there were conductors on both decks.

When were the conductors replaced by cash receptacles?

Same questions for the Star Ferry - except of course there were no conductors. When did tokens replace cash?

Was the Yaumati Ferry fare the same as the Star Ferry?

Thanks

John

Tips if you're going to publish a book

[work in progress...]

I've been asked a couple of times about this, so I'll jot down some ideas here. These are based on my limited experience of publishing a couple of books about Hong Kong history (volume 1 and volume 2). If you've published a book, I hope you'll add your tips in the comments below.

These are the main steps involved:
