They were in Hong Kong for some time before moving to their new countries to live. Click the photos to see Natasha's notes, and to leave any comments you can add.

Memories of:

Molly Odell radio interview, Hong Kong Heritage Radio3

Dear reader,

Molly Odell, featuring in my book to be publised, sent me a link to an interview she gave in January 2019 to Annemarie Evans of Hong Kong Heritage on Radio3 (HK). Molly lived in Shanghai at the time Charles Gesner van der Voort was interned in Chapei Civil Assembly Center (1943-45). If you want to hear the fascinating story of her life in Kobe, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Puerto Rico, please find the link at:

Close-up of pig in Ma Hang squatter area

Kirstin's photo is a good one to start the year of the pig. Kirstin lived in Stanley in the late 1970s, and took this photo of one of neighbouring Ma Hang's pig farms. Anyone who lived in Stanley at the time won't forget the terrible smell when the wind was in the wrong direction.

Another group of Hong Kong residents with pungent pig memories are

1970s kindergarten - Sandlin?

Hello, I am wondering if anybody can help me track down the location of the English-speaking kindergarten that I went to in the mid-late 1970s. I'm pretty sure it was called Sandlin, and I lived in the mid-levels but it may have been closer to the harbour or a bit further east. The only thing I really remember about it is the steep staircase which led down to it - which probably doesn't narrow it down much in this area!

Industrial heritage in Hong Kong

I am putting together a list of past industrial sites (and some present ones) in Hong Kong, with links to the relevant Gwulo pages (or if there is no dedicated Gwulo page for them yet, Public Works Department Annual Reports). There is already a very comprehensive list on the Industrial History of Hong Kong website - my list is just trying to group together relevant Gwulo pages and PWD sources.  For now, I have not included sites such as godowns, wharves, piers, electricity substations, etc as they are so numerous that it would be a time-consuming task.

Jewish Cemetery Tour on 17 March 2019

By popular demand, I (Howard Elias) am organising another tour of the Jewish Cemetery in Happy Valley.

You'll find full details and how to register below, but if you have any questions, please let me know in the comments.

When: Sunday afternoon, March 17th, starting at 2 pm. The tour should take about 90 minutes, and there will be time afterwards to walk around the grounds and take pictures.

Memories of:

1960s-1970s Matchbox Collection

Time permitting, I will be adding matchbox covers/labels of hotels, bars, restaurants, places of entertainment, airlines, etc that have been collected from the 1960s. The collection captures the establishments that were around at the time, the Wanchai and Tsim Sha Tsui bar scene and more importantly provides an insight into a long lost era. Former hotel, nightclub and bar scene as mentioned here Enjoy!

1900s-1930s Hong Kong photos

Dear reader,

While compiling information for my book "Charles in Shanghai", many photos were shared with me, including photos from Hong Kong of the 1900s-1930s. You can find these at my page at Flickr.com.
