1st June, new Gwulo Talk #5

The Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) are hosting this new talk, but it is open to all, not just RAS members.

The talk follows my usual format, but with a new selection of photos. I'm choosing photos from my collection that show people with a story to tell, who lived in Hong Kong during the late 19th, and early 20th Centuries.

All the photos have been scanned at high resolution so we can zoom in to see their hidden details.

Gwulo in the UK

Here are a few of the finds from my recent trip to the UK.

The National Archives

I spent a couple of days there, looking through old documents, maps, and photos from Hong Kong. I didn't have any specific documents to see on this visit, so I took pot luck with some general searches. I'll show some extracts below, but if you want me to look in them for anything specific, please leave a comment below.

Photos

I only saw a few photos on this visit, including this 1958 aerial view of Kai Tak, ref: AIR 28/1374. The reclamation for the new runway into the harbour is visible in the bottom left corner. It's a detailed photo, and worth clicking through to use the zoom for a closer look.

Maps

I had better luck with maps, especially a collection of

Serge Piankoff / Peacock's Naturalisation Application

(This is copied from the original document held in the UK National Archives, their ref: CO 323/1174/4)

To
HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG.
THE HUMBLE MEMORIAL of Sergei Patrowich Piankoff of the Peninsula Hotel, Kowloon, in the Colony of Hong Kong, Master-Baker, an alien.

SHOWETH:-

Lunch Wednesday 8 May ?

I’ll be in town starting next week for a couple of weeks. Anyone care to do lunch again? I can offer the American club is a venue but I cannot promise no rain… Perhaps a Chinese restaurant would work better ...

I’m proposing 8 May, but certainly open to other dates that week.

I shall finally be able to show my prototype of the Hong Kong Rate Books  project.

1939/1940 Internment of German Residents

At the outbreak of WWII in September 1939, German and other 'Enemy' residents of Hong Kong were interned at La Salle College for a short period. Does anyone have information on this topic including the fate of these internees ?

The Governor’s hat!

Ho loi  mo geen!

My question is about the rather fine ‘official’ head attire of the colonial governors. My mother worked in The Bank, as it was always referred to. She told me that one day she looked out of her north facing window down into Des Veoux Road and found that she was looking directly down onto the white  plumage adorning the top of the governor’s helmet. She said they were ostrich feathers.

I wonder if anyone can substantiate which bird provided the rather splendid decorations?

Paul Dutoit - any information?

I remember coming across this memorial plaque along Golden Hill Road a few years back and was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what it was doing here. My only knowledge of Paul Dutoit is that he was a Belgian racing driver in the early part of last century, but is this the same chap?

Naval Ships visiting Hong Kong

Please can any of the readership inform me whether HMS Hood [sunk by Bismark in 1941] ever visited Hong Kong in the 1930s

HMS Belfast /Hong Kong 1950-52

Hello, I am new to this forum. I am a current resident in Hong Kong and have recently received some photographs of my Late Grandfather who came here between 1950-52 on the HMS Belfast. It is my intention to take on a personal project exploring a 'then and now' family portrait. I would really value any help or pointers on getting started. I have both books listed here which are wonderful and a selection of other old Hong Kong books.
