"Cafe Weismann" vs "Cafe Wiseman"

I see there are two spellings and I'm interested in the changeover or any stories. A relative of mine, Ellen HJ King, is listed as the license holder in 1914 with the spelling of "Cafe Weismann" I think it was locate at Queens Road Central. Before her was Reichert, and further back, the original Hans Weismann who operated as a bakery and caterer. He sold out and returned to Germany in about 1908 I think after some over enhtusiastic expansions had left him short of funds. Apparently it was taken over by Lane Crawford and the spelling was changed to "Wiseman".

I look forward to seeing you on the 28th,

David

When: Sunday afternoon, January 28th, starting at 2 pm. The tour should take about 90 minutes, and there will be time afterwards for everyone to walk around the grounds and take pictures.

19th century Hong Kong

Hi everyone!

I am currently building a Minecraft version of 1860s hong kong but I lack photographs so I don't know what some buildings look like. Please post any photo you know or have of Hong Kong in the 1860s with the approximate location.

Thank you all!

Street Index?

Hi everyone!

May I ask where could we find all the historical street indexes? There are a few in HKU Library but all of 1950s or later (with one of 1894 only).

Thanks very much,

Jonathan

c.1904: North Point, St John's, and an unknown school

In the last newsletter for 2017 we'll wrap up a photo we've looked at a couple of times before, then flip it over to see if you can help identify an unknown school.

Here's the photo again, a view looking east from the Peak, taken around 1904:

Today I'll start off in the distance.

Kellett Island

Kellett Island in the centre is an easy landmark to spot.

Looking up at 12 o'clock from the island, we see the

When: At first glance this looks very similar to photo #4 in the Gwulo book:

Procession inches along a crowded street

We identified that was taken in May 1935, showing part the celebrations for King George V's silver jubilee. However the photo of the dragon was sold with the title
