Old bottles

I have a collection of old bottles that I have found over the years on the hillsides around Hong Kong island.  The Watsons bottles were found on the hillside behind the Governor's summer mansion on the Peak (before the slopes were concreted).  The flat bottomed torpedo bottle (Aquarius) was found in Tai Tam.  Can anyone date this one?

Talk on the Naval Dockyard Police - this Saturday

Gwulo readers will be very welcome at a talk at the Maritime Museum, Pier 8, this Saturday (24th February) at 4pm.  Free, but the $30 Museum entrance fee applies.  I've been researching this Lesser-Spotted-Police-Force some years now, and will be talking mainly about its workings til 1920s but with reference to later times too.

Oh, I thought i'd attached the flyer, but it seems to be beyond me.

Hard Hats

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the hat worn by the gentleman on the left in the photo below. This photo is a crop from a larger image of the Taikoo Cable Car from the sugar refinery up to the Sanitarium (sic) between Mount Butler and Mount Parker. We're wondering if it is some form of sartorial addition to further improve the protective qualities of the pith helmet? Has anyone seen anything similar?

Family Tucker

Hello,

I'm researching my father in laws family and I've hit a wall early on. His father was Ronald Edward Tucker, born 1932 and he lived with his family in Hong Kong for a while. We don't know much about them; my father in law knew that Ronald thought for years that his grandmother was his mother, and biological mother his sister.

What I have found so far is this:

Kung hei fat choi!

As we start the year of the dog, what do we have on Gwulo about the history of dogs in Hong Kong?

The earliest mention is from a Lane Crawford advertisement in 1879, where they offered "dog collars and chains" for sale.

The most recent comes from an outing in 2010. I was searching for more of the old wartime stoves behind Quarry Bay, and noted a warning sign: a python had been seen in the area and I should look after my dog and small children.

In between we've got a selection of photos showing owners and their pets over the years:

Internment camp numbers

One of my mother's cousins (then aged between 13 and 17, and now deceased) was interned in Hong Kong during the war, but she (and her own mother, who was also interned with her) are not mentioned in the lists of internees on this web site, nor in a couple of other lists that I've managed to find in archives in the U.K.

She was repatriated at the end of 1945, but in later life told her own children little about her experiences. They have no recollection of her mentioning the name or location of the camp, only that it was #13.
