Looking for information about:

  • Yolanda is looking for books about WW2 that describe "brave acts by Portuguese and Macanese people."
  • Alexander Findlay SMITH [1844-1926] was the man behind the Peak Tram. His previous employment on the Highland Railway in Scotland is often mentioned in connection with that. Does anyone know what work he did on the Highland Railway?

This is the latest Jurors List we're making searchable - here's how to join in, it'll only take around 30 minutes of your time.

We'll take the previous year's spreadsheet, then work through it page-by-page and edit in any changes so it matches this year's Jurors List.

[The list has been typed up by volunteers: David, Grace, iyom, and wingcli2015. Please help us type up the lists from other years - it takes less than 30 minutes to finish a page. Click here for details.]

Property occupied during WWII

My family lived in Hong Kong from the early 1900’s. I understand that they owned property here that was occupied during WWII. I am absolutely sure we don’t have any claim on the property anymore but I’m just keen to find out more about where it was they lived.

Should I start my search with the land registry?

Thanks

Having just read The Lone Flag about the British Consul, Reeves, I am keen to find a book, which refers to brave acts by Portuguese and Macanese people. [My mother is Macanese.]

How to search old Hong Kong newspapers for a certain word within a range of dates

Q. Jill asks how we could search for, say, any references to John Smith in the newspapers between 1894 and 1899? - i.e. looking for a name within a five year period (or more) pre-1900.

A. I don't know a way to just show exactly those results, but I can suggest a couple of techniques that will help make searching quicker.

A1. Try the simple search first

4.2.C Author Summary

If you visit a user's profile page (eg here's mine: https://gwulo.com/user/3),  you can now see all the pages that they created and / or commented on. The main profile page shows their latest five pages, then if you click the "Posts and comments" tab you can see all their pages.

The idea is to help in a couple of situations:

  1. I can't find the page I'm looking for, but I remember that user XYZ wrote it.
  2. I've really enjoyed the recent post by user XYZ, and would like to see more that they've written.
