BITS OF OLD CHINA

This first appeared in issue #1 of 'History Notes', compiled by the late Phillip Bruce. It is reproduced here on Gwulo by kind permission of Mr Bruce's family.

William C. Hunter was a long-time resident of Canton in the early part of the last century and he left entertaining accounts of what life was like in the great trading port before the upheavals of war. He was an American of the trading firm of Russell and Company and the following comes from his Bits of Old China, published in 1855:

Kowloon 1955-59

Hi all,

I'm new to this site. My wife and I lived in TTS and Shamsuipo 1955-59 when she worked for the Resettlement Department and I was at HMS Tamar.

Does anyone remember at that time the Chanteclair Restaurant on Nathan Road or the fantastic Ricky's Russian Restaurant a couple of streets back?

kind regards.....Keith

Chinese-style baby carriers (孭带) in Hong Kong

I've looked at this photo many times over the last few months, as it's one that's going into the Gwulo book. It got me thinking about how the cloth baby carrier has gone in and out of fashion.

The photo above was taken in 1954. I also found one in my collection that looks older, I guess taken sometime where in the

We're moving

The move to the new hosting company is underway. Two limitations while this is happening:

  1. You can't add anything new to the site (comments, photos, etc)
  2. The Zoom function for photos may not be available

I'm hoping to have Gwulo running be running at the new hosting company tomorrow, and will add a comment here with updates when there is news.

Partial list of those interned in Ma Tau-wai

This list has been compiled from various records in Arthur May’s papers and includes 140 of the 600 or so who were believed to be in the camp. It originally appeared as Appendix 6 of The Arthur May Story.

Old Robinson road

Hi, everyone!

I am currently painstakingly trying to recreate old Hong Kong in minecraft, because I want others to be able to experience what it was like. Does anyone have any old ariel photographs of old Robinson road? I'm having a really hard time designing the prominent mansions that once lined the streets.

Thanks!

Early 1900s view northeast from the Peak, looking over the Naval Yard Extension

Here's the photo I mentioned last week:

It's a large print, so there's lots of detail to see. For an example, look at the red square above, then look at that section enlarged below

RAF Sunderland Aircraft in Hong Kong

No. 88 Squadron RAF based in Hong Kong operated Sunderlands up to 1954 and played an important role, particularly in reconnaisance and search and rescue. Due to cost-cutting, the Sunderlands were then transferred to Malaya and Singapore but paid frequent visits to Hong Kong. I think the last operational flight by a Sunderland to Hong Kong was in 1958 with the last flypast of 3 Sunderland aircraft being flown on 21 April 1958 over the Harbour and Kowloon for the Queen's Birthday Parade.

What did the old Hong Kong GPO interior look like?

Hello everyone!

My name is Brandon, and I love old Hong Kong buildings. One of my favourites is the old GPO which was demolished in the 70s. Does anyone recall what the interior looked like? I could not find any photographs. A visual guide would be very helpful, explaining would also be fine.

Thanks!

Stanley Camp liberation 30 August 1945

My grandmother Henriette Aitken was interned with her son Edward Aitken. She was French and on liberation of Stanley Camp she raised the French flag. My father is certain that photos were taken but we can only find the British flag raising ones. Does anyone know of the whereabouts of the flag raising for the other nations internees?
