West End Park was one of the sites proposed for HKU - but rejected:

"It is buried between 3 hills, it is one of the very hottest spots in Hong Kong (I have 21 years experience), its position is very noisy and the area inadequate"

West end park was constructed in 1898. Two gentlemen, failing to acquire the land for building, donated $2,500 for the creation of the park if the government did the same. The site was extensively landscaped with a road constructed from the end of Robinson Road to Lower Richmond Road (today Lyttelton Road)
