Veronica Walker's birthday party

Veronica Walker's birthday party

This photo of Veronica Walker's birthday party was preserved by my cousin, Diana Warren, who is the taller of the two girls in the back row and who lived at 19 Broadwood Road. Veronica, known as Ronnie by my cousin, is in the centre. My cousin has written that she lived at 2 Broadwood Road, but it must be 4 Broadwood Road according to Siobhan Bland Daiko's post of that title. I would guess the date to be 1937. There are several other photos of Veronica and her mother in the album - some in Hong Kong (1937) and some in Australia following her evacuation with her mother. One photo is labelled Mr Walker & Veronica. I wonder if any of the children at this party ended up in Stanley Camp, or are even still alive.

My mother, Marjorie Bray (then Marjorie Bottomley) is standing on the far left with the long plaits. She was aged about 8. I'll ask her if she remembers the names of any of the other children.

Corrine Bottomley (via Joan Izard) writes:

I'm writing to answer yours of the 9th on those birthday photos on Gwulo. They were all pretty ancient but of course I recognised Marjorie right away in the picture from Jill Fell of Veronica Walker's (Ronnie Bland's) 8th birthday party on Broadwood Road in 1937. Marj is the one with the long be-ribboned plaits, standing next to Ian Robertson, Malcolm's brother and our best man.

Kathleen Hyde-Lay has confirmed that she is standing in the back row of this photo on the left.
