Sirmio

Sirmio

I found this in Cat Street last week, among a pile of old photos.

It's one of those tiny thumbnail photos, appx 4 x 2.5cm, and I nearly threw it down as a photo from someone's trip to Europe. But a little bell went off that it looked like the photos of Eu Tong Sen's 'castle', Sirmio, we've seen - and indeed that's what it is.

Based on the other photos in the pile, I'm guessing a date of the 1960s, but it could be anywhere between the 1950s and 1970s.

I'm not sure what the scene is either. Maybe a couple of the staff who worked at Sirmio, walking up the drive to work?

Wow, what a stroke of luck! Pix of Sirmio are like hen's teeth! No doubt the dealer/hawker never suspected its true value. Congratulations on a great find!

There used to be a lot of treasures on Cat St but after the clean-up campaign several years ago everything dried up for fear of these Urban Services patrols prosecuting any hawker daring to set up shop. But things may have relaxed since.

Keep up the good work!

Yes, it was pure luck. The couple of times I've had a sift through the photos, there's been little if anything of interest. I guess anything obviously interesting gets picked out and sold before they reach the stall.

Here are the other photos we've found of Sirmio.
