Villa Stolzenfels was bought by the Dutch steamer company Java-China-Japanlijn (later also known as Royal Interocean Line) in 1903. It became the residence of the company’s managing director and was renamed Tjibatoe.

Tjibatoe is the name of a river in Indonesia (near Bandung). All ships of the original Java-China-Japanlijn were named after rivers near Bandung.

I have it from hearsay that the house was bombed during World War Two. Any evidence this is true?

Other buildings in this area were bombed, so it is possible. Also, the site was re-developed soon after the war as the current building on the site was completed in 1949. That also suggests the previous building was damaged in the war, though it could have been damaged by looting.
