Work on the construction of the Cenotaph began in 1922 by Messrs Palmer and Turner (well known architectural firm in Hong Kong) and was modelled on the War Memorial in London. It was completed in 1923.
The open area designated for the construction of the Cenotaph was considered at the time the 'finest site' worthy for the erection of Hong Kong's War Memorial.
1n April 1922, the open area was used for the building of a temporary Royal Pavillion in connnection with the visit by the Prince of Wales ('future' King Edward VIII) to Hong Kong.

It was a beautiful sunny day in August. But it was also a sad and stirring occasion when the last Liberation Day event was held at the Cenotaph under a year before the handover.
Jack Edwards - a former POW who sadly passed on a few years ago. He was strong and passionate and successfully persuaded the local and British Governments to grant full British citizenship to the widows of servicemen who fought in the war.
