Notable in this image are the numbers of spectators on the rooftops of various buldings in Central.

SCMP of 16 January 1949 has a report on the flight over the city, but no picture with the text

I think the photo has to do with the first demonstration flight of the RAF's Vampire jet aircraft over Hong Kong on 15 January 1949. Photo probably taken from the roof top of the South China Morning Post Building on Wyndham Street.

As mentioned here on the trip to Hong Kong on 11 January, the Vampire aircraft had overshot Kai Tak and subsequently made a forced landing on a beach at Bias Bay. It was later transported back to Kai Tak.

The Vampire was the second jet fighter in service with the R.A.F.  It was replaced by the very similar Venom.

The first jet powered aircraft to reach Hong Kong and possibly China is believed to be a Royal Air Force de Havilland Vampire fighter flown up from Singapore in January 1949.

Unfortunately, the pilot missed Hong Kong and overshot. With a lack of fuel, he was forced to land on a beach at Bias Bay in Chinese territory.
