Warren Street sign 2.png

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1997

This is the newer of the two Warren Street signs that were photographed as mementoes for the grandchildren of C.E. Warren just before the handover. The street was built in 1915-16 in order to house the factory workers and led to the Warren factory itself. The area was not built up at the time. In the China Directory the company name of "Warren" is rendered as "Wah Lun".

This is the older of the two Warren Street signs photographed just before the handover for the grandchildren of C.E. Warren, who had known the Warren factory and the street as children. The sign wouldn't be older than 1915-16 which is when the street was built in order to house the factory workers.

James Peak is given in the Jurors List for 1902 as "Overseer" for C. Warren, Wyndham Street. This entry would refer to the period just before the company became C.E. Warren & Co. and moved to 30 Des Voeux Road. I can't find any other information about James Peak. He is not subsequently listed as being on the staff of the company.

Dover Ranges ad.jpg

I am certain that our family company, C.E. Warren & Co. never manufactured a cooking range of its own. I have never heard of the "Warren" cooking range. Perhaps there was indeed another company that manufactured one by this name that so conveniently matched our own. These ranges still exist as vintage pieces. The photographs of the real thing look a lot smarter than this illustration.

A vintage Cheavin's stoneware water filter can definitely still be purchased as an antique today. I remember a stoneware water filter sat in the kitchen of our tea estate in Ceylon in the 1950s. All drinking water had to be boiled and filtered through this. The stoneware filters are a lot longer lasting and nicer to look at than today's plastic equivalent and probably just as efficient.

I have not been able to identify the Skotoswede as a brand or find what company might have manufactured it. Ideas welcome! It sounds vaguely Scandinavian or German and I wondered if C.E. Warren & Co. had bought it in from Arnholds like some of their cutting machinery. I believe the cooking ranges advertised here were British.
