Chief engineer of Charles Baudouin steam ships, Alfred Walters married Kathleen Lysaught, youngest daughter of William and Isabella Lysaught on 18 September 1909. I’m grateful to Patricia O’Sullivan for this information. The Lysaught family are well documented in her book Policing Hong Kong. In 1916-1917, Alfred’s name is given as that of the rate payer of nos. 1 & 2 “Belvedere”, Broadwood Road, but is deleted in the 1918-19 Rate Book, and replaced by that of the new owner Wong Yee Chung.<Read more ...>
Ivor Gourgey belonged to the Kadoorie family. He was the son of Rachel Gourgey née Kadoorie who was the sister of Ellis and Elly Kadoorie. According to the Rate Book for 1918-19 he owned 17 Broadwood Road IL 2127. 16 Broadwood Road IL 2128 was owned by Charles Sassoon Gubbay, while Sir Ellis Kadoorie owned 11 Broadwood Road. The 1910 jurors list shows Ivor Gourgey as Assistant for E.S. Kadoorie and in 1913 as Clerk for Moxon & Taylor. I'm not sure of the relationship between Charles Sassoon Gubbay and Harry Gubbay, mentioned in connection with Broadwood Road by Angela Niles in the posts on Annie Bond and childhood memories of the family house. According to the Rate Book, my grandfather Charles Warren sold 16 Broadwood Road I.L. 2128, to C.S. Gubbay in 1916. It wasn't part of the C.E. Warren & Co.'s Ridge development and I don't know if the Warren family briefly lived at no. 16.<Read more ...>
The Cossart family, who were living at 22 Broadwood Road in 1923, were near neighbours of my grandfather Charles E. Warren and were among the mourners at his funeral on 9 June 1923. The inscription on Louis Cossart's own gravestone solves the mystery of who the senders of the wreath from "Phyllis and Betty" were, as recorded without surname in CEW's obituary. They were his daughters. Louis' wife was Sophia, known as "Siss". Cossart worked for Asiatic Petroleum Ltd. and his gravestone in the Colonial Cemetery was erected by his colleagues according to the inscription. <Read more ...>
I'm interested to find out more about William Anderson who was the Managing Director of Anderson Music Company and who was one of the first residents of Broadwood Road and close neighbour of my grandfather, Charles Warren. The Rate Book of 1918-1919 has William Anderson at "Gilstead", 18 Broadwood Road, which I believe was one of the houses built by my grandfather's company. Captain Henry Walter Walker and his wife, Tomé, lived at the house called "Brinkelly", no. 15 Broadwood Road, from the inception of Broadwood Road in 1916. (See my post on Tomé Walker). They were near neighbours of my grandfather, C.E. Warren, who probably built their house, but I know nothing about them. I haven't found Henry Walker in the Jurors Lists or the Carl Smith Index. Any information welcome.
As I said in my previous post, Henry Walker died in 1940, aged 73, and is buried in the Protestant Cemetery.
H.W. and Tomé Walker are listed in the 1916 Rate Book for the newly created Broadwood Road as being among the first residents there. They lived at no. 15 which was called "Brinkelly" and were neighbours to both my grandfather, C.E. Warren, until he died in 1923 and then my uncle and his wife, Leslie and Cicely Warren, who moved into no. 19. I've previously queried whether these Walkers were in any way related to Vernon Walker of HK Tramways, who, according to the Gwulo contributor, Douglas, came to Hong Kong in 1921.
