Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai; it also had offices in Hong Kong and Tientsin (Tianjin). One of its first directors, Mr. Willem Kien, worked in China from 1898. After HCHC was founded in 1903, he worked for the company in Hong Kong and Shanghai. John Charles Bowring

I am trying to find a photo or drawing of John Charles Bowring (son of Sir John), but so far without success. He was in Hong Kong from 1842 as a partner of Jardine Matheson and a keen collector of beetles. He retired to Exeter in the 1860s and became a Justice of the Peace. None of the logical sources seem to have his image, although illustrations of his father and brothers are relatively easy to find. Can anybody help?

Holland-China Trading Company: Hong Kong, Johnston Road, Central Wanchai, VW T1 delivery van, ca. 1956 (original print)

Charles Gesner van der Voort had started his career in Rotterdam, at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). In 1938, he went to Shanghai for the firm. The Japanese interned him, and most other Dutch nationals, from 1943-45. In camp, he met his wife Nancy and they married after the war. After a leave in The Netherlands, they returned to the Orient, where Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong. <Read more ...>

This photo wrapper contained several photos made by Willem Kien, in Hong Kong in the 1930s. As director of Holland-China Trading Company, he had been working in Hong Kong in the late 1890s to 1910s and visited the China East coast from time to time in the 1930s.

Modern Photo Supplies Co. was located at Queen's Road Central, in or near Queen's Theatre Building in Hong Kong.
