The current building on the site keeps the name, and is called the Golden Gate Commercial Building.

The demolition date is an estimate, based on the completion date of the next building here.

Hongkong Daily Press / Wyndham Hotel [????-1924]

The position of the marker is approximate. The descriptions in the articles below say it was at "the junction of Wyndham Street and Glenealy", but I'm not sure exactly which building that was.

A search for Wyndham Hotel in the old newspapers turns up a couple of hits. First from The Hong Kong Telegraph, 1924-3-11 page 1:

Wyndham hotel.

To be pulled down.

George Green ran the Criterion Hotel here in the 1900s. The Hotel was previously on Pottinger Street. He's mentioned in Government Notification No. 162 in 1914:

This place is mentioned in several jurors lists: 

  • 1897-1900: Frederick Meltruish (spelled "Melhuish" in some years), Manager, Criterion Dining Saloon, 21 & 23 Pottinger Street.
  • 1901-1902: Same manager & address, but the place is now called the Criterion Hotel.
  • 1904: Marshall Lorenzo is listed as Manager.

A search for Criterion in HKGRO also turns up several mentions.

Location is a guess, based on address of "17 Milestone", in the Hong Kong $ Directory for 1968.
