Yau Ma Tei reclamation starts

View from the peak onto Yau Ma Tei area. Reclamation has started already. I think on the left side there is a ship that pumps sand (or at least a sand/water slurry) from the bottom of the harbour onto the new created island.

I think it's getting more and more tricky for the Jordan Road ferries to get out here.

Praya East Reclamation [1929- ]

Date Place completed:
1929-05-31

This reclamation in the 1920s pushed the Wanchai coastline from Praya East (today's Johnston Road) out to Gloucester Road.

We can follow its progress in the annual reports of the Public Works Department.

Work began in 1921, though the major work didn't get going until the following year. Here's the description in the report for 1921:

Praya East Reclamation Scheme

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

This image is believed to be the East Praya contractor's steam locomotives involved in the reclamation works. However the newsprint doesn't actually say so. Similar reclamation works were being done elsewhere around this time, notably at Kai Tak and the land formation for the Kowloon Tong estates using narrow gauge railways with similar contractor's locomotives. The backgound hills may give a clue. The tree in the right seems to be a bit too substantial to be growing on newly reclamation land.
