Marked on the 1920 Kowloon map, as being located in the Fo Pang area. The site is part of a larger area now occupied by Wah Yan College (Kowloon). Two adjacent factories, located on K.I.L. 629 and 631, on two rectangles of land bordered by Station St (now Shanghai St), Nathan Rd, Waterloo Rd and Man Ming Lane (with Portland St running down the middle), in Yau Ma Tei. Shown on the 1896 and 1903 Kowloon maps, but unclear whether still shown on the 1920 Kowloon map.

A photo of the 'factories of Nanyan [sic] Brothers Tobacco Co. Ltd. at Sung Wong Toi Road, c.1915' appears on p.78 of A Century of Kowloon Roads and Streets (Joint Publishing (HK), 2000). It looks to have been located very close to the waterfront, but the precise location is not yet known. A large factory of the Tien Chu Chemical Industries (HK) Ltd was located at 72 Pak Tai Street, Ma Tau Kok/To Kwa Wan and is marked on the 1956 Kowloon map. It occupied a 200,000 ft2 site, and manufactured food additives/powders and raw chemicals, including caustic soda and hydrochloric acid.
It is also referred to as Tien Chu Ve-Tsin Chemical Industries Company.
Hi everyone! A few questions. How would someone travel from Canton to Hong Kong in the late 50s-early 60s? Which ports in Canton and HK would have been used? My grandma moved to HK in 1961 aged 20. She worked as an accountant at a factory that made leather gloves - any ideas of where abouts this factory would have been?
Also, does anyone have any pictures/experience of living in an apartment at that time, and what were they like? I know most people here are probably white middle class, but I am interested in seeing apartments that the Chinese would have lived in. <Read more ...>
