Think this is Catchick Street close to the Kennedy Town abbatoirs and the waste incinerator. The Kennedy Town Tram Terminus should be a bit further down the road.

Mei Foo airview 1973

Mei Foo Sun Chuen first to third phase have been finished.

In between, some tanks of the former Mobil Oil Tank Farm seem to have survived.

The long building on the right was the KMB bus depot maintenance and parking depot. Right of it is a small basin, also visible on the photo from 1968. This was reclaimed in the following years. To the very right a bit of the Lai Chi Kok government incinerator is visible.

Shek Kwu Chau [????- ]

Home of the Shek Kwu Chau Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre run by the Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers (http://www.sarda.org.hk/eng/index.html). Princess Diana visited the centre twice and a building is named after her.

The island is a restricted area closed to the public.

Mui Wo Waste Incinerator (2nd generation) [1987-????]

This is the larger incinerator that replaced the first generation incinerator that was further inland. Henri McKerr-Kastan helped locate that one, so I asked if he knew where this one was.

He replied:

I think it was along Mui Wo Ferry Pier Road near the sewage works. There was also a slaughterhouse there.

Municipal Wastes Incinerators in Hong Kong

Introduction

Municipal wastes were dumped in specially designed areas (tips) over decades. Due to high prices and low availability of land the Government of Hong Kong decided by the end of the 1950’s to investigate the building of municipal waste incinerators. At that time it became evident that the further lifetime of the main tip at Gin Drinkers Bay was limited.

Although demolishing chimney stacks by blasting is common in many countries, the stringent requirements has deterred or barred demolition by means of blasting in Hong Kong.

 A tedious method was used whereby slicing sections of the concrete structure and breaking it up bit by bit. It took months to have the complete chimney torn down safely.
