There is already a photograph on Gwulo of a different Canberra bomber at Kai Tak(?) but John noted that this was the first one to be flown into Kai Tak - now corrected to Sek Kong - in early 1956 by Air Marshall Sir Dermot Boyle.  As the newly appointed Chief of the Air Staff he was making a 20,000 mile tour of R.A.F. bases in the Middle and the Far East.

The Vampire was the second jet fighter in service with the R.A.F.  It was replaced by the very similar Venom.

Bruce's flight home was in one of B.O.A.C.'s Britannias, Their turbo prop engines were significantly quieter than most propellor planes and they were known as the whispering giants.  Unfortunately for B.O.A.C. they rapidly became obsolescent when the jets came on stream and monopolised the long haul routes.

Quite a few R.A.F. personnel flew between the U.K. and Kai Tak in Transport Command's Hastings aircraft.  The three or four day journey was sometimes extended to several weeks on account of mechanical problems with the Hastings fleet.  The Hastings was the R.A.F's version of the Hermes that was flown for a short time by B.O.A.C., before being replaced by the more reliable Argonauts - DC4s built by Canadair, but powered by the same superb and versatile Rolls Royce Merlin engines as used in the R.A.F.'s Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lancasters.

1946 Over Hunghom

Interesting view of Hung Hom. I believe that still some war damage can be seen, e.g. at Green Island Cement and probably also at the Ma Tau Kok Gasworks where the gas holder is visible only.

Kai Tak Airport in the distance. It also looks that Cable & Wireless Station, Hung Hom [1946-1970] hasn't been built yet.
