HUD_Expatriate_Staff_Quarters_in_Whampoa

Text on Flickr:

Upper photo (circa 1984) showing the HUD staff quarters was still under occupation although the dockyard was in its final years of function, largely as a container storage yard.

Lower photo showing the pre-war block of terraced houses where expatriate staff has just been vacated prior to demolition (1986).

Note: The upper part of the photo is much like this one by IDJ.

1946 Over Hunghom

Interesting view of Hung Hom. I believe that still some war damage can be seen, e.g. at Green Island Cement and probably also at the Ma Tau Kok Gasworks where the gas holder is visible only.

Kai Tak Airport in the distance. It also looks that Cable & Wireless Station, Hung Hom [1946-1970] hasn't been built yet.

This family photo was taken in mid 50s when I was a kid (the youngest at that time). I was told that the place was Watson's factory on Mok Chong St., Hung Hom. I wonder who can verify this and have a photo of this similar place to share?

Coronation 12th May 1937 First Day Cover

1937

This first day cover for the 1937 Coronation was sent to John Edward Barrow (my great-uncle) at the China Light and Power Company premises on Tai Wan Road in the Hung Hom area.  He worked at the Hok Un power station from 1921 to 1938.  In 1938 he returned to England in view of the changing political situation.  Many of his friends who stayed in Hong Kong did not survive the war years.

Map of Hung Hom Bay about 1990

A detail from a 1990 tourist map shown Hung Hom Bay. On the eastern sideare  two ferry terminals. Although the copy isn't really good, it can be read that the ferry lines on the north-western pier go to Wan Chai and North point, and from the south-eastern one to Central.

The ternimal on the western side has no information on ferry connections.

Hong Kong Panorama,1970

Amazing (or frightening) how careless smoke was released into the air in these years. Right hand side is North Point Power Station, and on the Kowloon Peninsula Green Island Cement Works emitted even more smoke.
