Kwai Chung Eastern Sea Industrial Building 葵涌東海大廈 [1975- ]

Date Place completed:
c.1975-01-01 (Month, Day are approximate)

I have always been interested in this building when I used to study in Kwai Chung. There is very limited information about the building online although it is believed to be completed in 1975. The Bauhaus and Art Deco style design that was unique to find in Kwai Chung factory district makes it stand out from all the others. I am hoping to write an essay on it and trace back its architectural/ social origin, hopefully to have more people appreciate its modernist design.

A nice Art Deco design cocktail invitation to Repulse Bay Road.

F.A. Swoffer was a manager/demonstration pilot with Arnhold & Co in Hong Kong and Shanghai. In 1938 he wrote articles for the UK magazine FLYING, one of which was titled "War Pilot in the Far East". The lurid colour image on the cover shows Chinese fighters attacking Japanese bombers with Japanese jumping out of flaming aircraft.

Art Deco style building-Tuen Mun/Castle Peak-1996

This distinctive art-deco style building sits above Leung Mun Road, Tuen Mun. It has been there since at least the early 1960s. In 1996 when this picture was taken I believe it was a Boy's Home of some sort, although when visiting the adjacent roads around it on many occasions, I've never seen any signs of people in the grounds or the building. It appears to have been a private house at one time set in isolation above the original northern shoreline of Castle Peak Bay, facing south.

Man Sze Cheung Yuen, Tai Po [????- ]

This private building in Tai Po is a bit of an enigma. Built in 1955 it is situated on the main thoroughfare in the old part of town, Kwong Fuk Road. It has a large amount of private land, part courtyard part garden behind its imposing walls, which is quite uncommon for private buildings

If anybody can shed some light on its ownership or history it would be interesting to hear. I have been past on the bus a couple of times and on one occasion saw some uniformed children playing there, so perhaps it is now a private school or hostel or some sort of childrens home?
