Comparison of parts of two panorama views from

1887 (probably older)

1895

I can identify only two buildings on both photos, big changes in just ten years (possibily a bit more).

Hello I am new in Gwulo.com and here is my first photo to share, it is an albumen photo showing panorama view of Victoria harbour in Central back in circa 1895. The following clues I found in this photo:

- The 2nd Gen. Central market has already built(at rightmost), so this photo at least taken after 1895

- There is no clue that the reclamation of Des Voeux Road has started yet, that means it was before 1889

I would like to hear anymore clue you guys found in this photo!

Hong Kong Daily Press 1 April 1891 refers. Gleaning through the "to let" advertisements, it would appear that the estate became available for rent from 1 February 1891. It is noted in supplementary references that the estate consisted of 16 houses.

Holland China Syndikaat, founding document, 1896, p. 1/3

Charles Gesner van der Voort had started his career in Rotterdam, at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC). In 1938, he went to Shanghai for the firm. The Japanese interned him, and most other Dutch nationals, from 1943-45. In camp, he met his wife Nancy and they married after the war. After a leave in The Netherlands, they returned to the Orient, where Charles continued to work for HCHC in Hong Kong.

1890s Temporary Timber Pier - Ice House Street

From this article here , I think the Star Ferry alongside the pier is the "Guiding Star". This may be the temporary timber pier.
