In 1927 the local governmnet installed a new patented type of gas lamp at the traffic circle near the Queen Victoria monument and statue in Central. The design of the suspended lamp, manufactued in Britain, was known as the "Rochester" . This board stood outside the offices of The China Mail newspaper, on the corner of Wyndham Street and Wellington Street. The headline 'Master Of Compromise' appeared in the issue published on Saturday, 18 August 1928, and gives us the exact date the photo was taken!
