The predecessor of La Salle College, the mother school of Bruce Lee.

Built in 1917, now Windsor Mansion 29-31 Chatham Road South

Brother Aimar was the man whose vision and courage led to the eventual establishment of La Salle College. In the 20's, the Government encouraged people to buy land around Kowloon Tong and to set up a residential area. The shift of the Portugese Community from Hong Kong Island made the establishment of a Catholic school there imperative..............

Baskets on a shoulder pole

This 1927 photo shows baskets hanging from a shoulder pole. We'll meet the people who used these poles, and take a closer look at the wide variety of loads they carried.

Kowloon air view TST 1927-28

On Flickr the date given is 1934.

I'm quite sure that the date is 1927 or early 1928. Peninsula Hotel was finished in 1927, and the tower on Signal Hill received a coupola in the second quarter of 1928 - it's not on the photo.

The house on the hilltop in this c.1929 photo was demolished by the Japanese during their occupation of Hong Kong in the 1940s. They buried a valuable historic relic at the site, and it is believed to still be there today!

Wedding in Shanghai, Philip Harding Klimanek and Zoia Serjevna Kojevnikova, 1922

Philip Harding Klimanek (1883-1965) was born in the Czech Republic, at the time his place of birth was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In ca. 1905 he started to work for Holland-China Trading Company, in Hong Kong.

In 1939, when Charles Gesner van der Voort arrived in Shanghai to work for the company, he was Charles' superior. In a letter home he wrote: "Played chess with Klimanek in the French Club" [translation Pieter Lommerse, the French Club was Le Cercle Sportif Français, a fashionable place to be in the 1930s and it still exists today].
