From my Hong Kong Map (1980). The map shows two ferry piers ("onshore", not extending into the sea): the north-eastern one going to North Point, the south-western one to Wanchai.

This is a paraphrase of a document held at the National Archives in Kew, UK.

Early stages of plans from 1958 by the Admiralty, in conjunction with the HK Government, to reduce the size of the HK Naval Dockyard to a Small Ships Maintenance Base. Given the code Hemlock, it became Fennel and then Sandy Fennel, differing only in small details the result of consultation between the two parties.

Reduction of the Dockyard area was required by the HK Government to allow construction of a new road, and it suited the Admiralty, who were facing a force reduction.

Whilst going through old photos and papers from my father's time in Hong Kong (1947 - 1963) I found this map from the 1950's which may be of interest to some as it shows ferry routes and the old Kai Tak airport.  No tunnels in those days!

Before and after Route Twisk

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):

The original route from Tsuen Wan to Sek Kong is shown in red. It was 23 miles long, running along the coast to Tuen Mun, up and around to Yuen Long, then across to Sek Kong.

Route Twisk, shown in blue, shortened the journey to just 7 miles.
