Early photos of Mid-levels

Thank you to Martyn Gregory for sharing these old photos of Mid-levels with us. They were taken in the late 1800s.

You can click on any photo to visit its page. There you can zoom in to see more detail, read any notes about the photo, and add a comment about where and when it was taken.

The photos come from several albums of photos, probably bought as souvenirs of visits to Hong Kong. Professional photographers offered a selection of popular views. Customers could choose the photos they liked, and have them mounted in an album.

Government House and the nearby Botanical Gardens (then called the "Public Gardens") were both popular choices. Here's a view looking up at Government House, with the slopes of the Peak in the background:

For the next photo we've moved inside Government House. We're looking out from

The Yang - family: Liang Kee & Co.

I am doing a project about a family named Yang, and I'm looking for any information at all about them or their company. This is what I have been told by their son, who moved to Norway in 1960:

Rabbits on The Peak

I have been told about feral rabbits, and peacocks,on The Peak around the 1960s,at Little Peak School and Matilda Hospital.

Does anyone know more?

"A TRUE FRIEND TO CHINA"

A week or two ago I launched my new book, 'Jack Jones, A True Friend to China' at a meeting of the Royal Asiatic Society at the Helena May.  This is the story of the Friends Ambulance Unit 'China Convoy' and how it distributed medical aid in China throughout the nineteen forties, as told in the FAU newsletter writings of Jack Jones, its transport director.  Jack was later to write a world best selling 'Suzie Wong' story called, 'A Woman of Bangkok, beating Richard Mason to publication by just one year.

When: The date, 1902, is printed on the photo's mounting card.

Where: The card is titled "Looking east over the bay and fishing village of Shaukiwan, China". An 1895 map of this area [1] shows the bay marked "Aldrich Bay", with Lyemun Barracks at the top of the hill.

Lyemun Barracks

The names have changed over the century or so since this photo was taken. Aldrich Bay has fallen out of use, though Mr Aldrich's name is still used for several buildings in the area.

The Barracks buildings are still there, but they no longer house any soldiers. The area is now open to the public, and known as the Lei Yue Mun Park and Holiday Village [2].

Who: The most obvious person in the photo is the girl in the foreground. She had a special reason to be in this photo, which we'll talk about later.

Dates in Place's title

I've updated Places so that their dates of completion and demolition are automatically added in to the title. It works the same way it does on a Person page. eg see the "[1927- ]" automatically added to this Place's title: http://gwulo.com/peninsula-hotel

It should help in a couple of ways:

Royal Navy Hong Kong 1951-54

My fatherw as based at HMS Tamar during teh Korean War, he got polio wnd was assigne dto the Navy Station instead of going to Korea. He was a Lieutenant RNVR George William Maycock. My elder brother Nicholas was born there in 1953 an dhe had quarters on the Peak.

He made reference to an attack on a Patrol Boat by Chinese pirates who slaughtered the crew but I can only find reference to the ML1323 taht was sheleld by Chinese forces. Can anyone enlighten me as to the date, location and casualties involved please.

Many thanks

Ruins at Mount Austin

Can anyone tell me more about the ruins half way up the hillside opposite what used to be Mount Austin Mansions, above the playground. What were they? And are they still there?

Quan Kai - bio info required

Could someone supply biographical information on Quan Kai who was a wealthy business man in Canton and Hong Kong in the early 1900s? He was born about 1854.

He was the owner of Kwong Hee Ying at No. 264, Des Voeux Road Central in 1907 and comprador for several firms and agent for the Portland Flouring Company and several other businesses.

Deutscher Klub

Hi,

I learned, that in 1927 there was a German Tennis Club in Kowloon (Deutscher Tennis Klub) and in 1931 there was another German Club (Deutscher Klub) at Butterfield and Swire Building 4th. Floor.

Did Hong Kong had two (2) German Clubs (Deutscher Klub) at that time ? And how about the Club Germania which was established long time ago with the first Generation Building on Wyndham Street ?

Would appreciate, if somebody can help me out with my questions

Thank you very much

Daniel
