United Services Club

Hello,

Does anybody knows something about a "United Services Club" which was apparently located in the same building as the Hong Kong Hotel in 1875 ?

On which corner of the building was that Club located ?

Appreciate your kind assistance and help. Thank you very much.

Kind regards,

Daniel

Pottinger Map and Gordon Map

Dear Colleagues,

I found two layouts of maps. One from 1842 which is named (the Pottinger Map), and the other map from 1843 is named (the Gordon Map)

I tried to search who this Mr. Gordon was. I could not find a surname of this person. Who was Mr. Gordon ?

Any information regarding Mr. Gordon is very much appreciated

Thank you and kind regards,

Daniel

Central magistracy

Dear Colleagues,

Can somebody explain to me when the first central magistracy was built.

I have learned from a map, dated 1845, that the central magistracy was not standing on the same location as it is standing know. The present building was built in 1913. But from another map (from 1857) the magistracy was already on the place as it is today.

Would it be possible, that there was a second magistracy built perhaps already (one year later) in 1846 ?

Thank you very much for your kind help

Best regards,

Daniel

Gunnar Flann - account of HK military life 1950

Interesting account here of two years spent doing national service in the Royal Artillery, mostly in Hong Kong. Some good photos appear at the end of each chapter.

The Twelve Apostles and The Forty Thieves

My current project is researching the lives of  “The Twelve Apostles” and “The Forty Thieves” – i.e. the two groups of Royal Marines recruited to the Hong Kong Police in 1899 and 1900 respectively.  Anyone interested in the stories will find them on my Hong Kong Police Ancestors Blog:  http://hongkongpoliceancestors.blogspot.co.uk/

The Sports Club

Formed in 1928 , membership to be half Chinese and half non Chinese, the club was very popular as an alternative to the Hong Kong Club.   It had a box at the Jockey Club at happy Valley and Shatin.  Somehow it seems to have faded away and,at its final venue in Whyndam St,  turned into a restaurant.  Memories of its hey day andstories of its demise would I am sure interest many old hands.   DR Bob Duncan ex Chairman 1986.
