Fred Evans' photos: Army life in 1950s Hong Kong

Fred arrived in Hong Kong in June 1957, stationed here with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment. He was based at Sek Kong throughout, sailing home again in October 1959. Below you can browse through several hundred of the photos he took during that time.

Hong Kong Historical Aircraft Association

The Hong Kong Historical Aircraft Association (HKHAA) was founded in 1992 by a small group of dedicated aviation enthusiasts with a simple but bold idea. Their goal was to build a full-size flying replica of the Farman biplane which in 1911, made the first powered flight in Hong Kong at Shatin. The replica was built, and flown successfully on 15 November 1997 at the new Hong Kong International Airport prior to its official opening. The Farman is now suspended from the roof of the terminal as a reminder to everyone using the airport of Hong Kong’s aviation origins.

A34 Comet Tanks, Sek Kong

The Comet tank had first seen service in 1944, fighting in Europe at the end of WWII. During the 1950s, the Comet was phased out and replaced with the newer Centurion tank.

Comets first arrived in Hong Kong in 1949 with the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. Richard Rinaldi gives their arrival dates as: ‘B’ Squadron ca. May, remainder June".

When Fred Evans arrived in Hong Kong in 1957, the Comets were still here but their days were numbered. Indeed if you look at this timeline of postings for his regiment, the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, you'll see he was part of the "last regular regiment equipped with Comet".

Before he left Hong Kong in 1959, he saw the arrival of the newer Centurion tanks. That marked the end of the Comet's service with the British Army.

Here are some photos of Comet tanks in Hong Kong, mostly from Fred's albums:
