STANLEY 1960's

Hi all - I'm trying to write up my life as a soldiers' son in the 50's and 60's and in an attempt to make it a more interesting tale of a world that no longer exists, I need to add some photos.  Tricky as mobile phones hadn't been invented!  If anyone has some oictures of Stanley in the early 1960's,  which I remember to be a rather smelly fishing village, I would be most grateful, and more importantly, so will my children, if I could pinch some copies.  If it helps, my email address is: jon.boileau@btinternet.com

Questionnaires for my Final-Year Thesis

Hello, everyone. I am final year student majoring in Urban Studies in CUHK. I am currently conducting my final-year thesis regarding heritage conservation and related online communities. This study titled "Heritage in Everyday Life: An Investigation of Citizens' Perception on Heritage in Online Communities" aims to explore how citizens interpret (built) heritages and their online participation. The survey is divided into 3 parts, and the time estimated to complete the survey is around 5  to 10 minutes.

Klaus has discovered that the Star Theatre in TST was created by disassembling the old Victoria Theatre on Hong Kong island, transporting it across the harbour, and re-building it in TST. As he notes, once you know the story the similarities between the two buildings are clear to see:

About plantation road

Hi David,

This is Hanson Chan. I am a creative director of a graphic design firm - Frames. I stumble upon your website gwulo.com, while researching our upcoming design project in the peak - plantation road.

Firstly I can't help but be amazed by the amount of work you've put together as a tribute to the old Hong Kong. It's pretty magnificent!

Quoting sources: why it's important, and how to do it well

As we post information to Gwulo - whether text or photos - it's a big help if we can include a brief note of the source, to let readers know where the information came from.

For photos, that usually means a link to the web page it came from, or a note that it is from your own collection.

For text, eg a date that something happened, you might note a link to the web page where you read it, or a book's name and page number, or even that you were there on the day and it is a personal memory.

Quoting sources helps you, authors, readers, and the Gwulo website:

Cost to buy a two-bedroom flat in the late 1950s in Hong Kong

Hi!

I'm doing research on a book. Can anyone please tell me roughly what it cost to buy a two-bedroom flat in Hong Kong/Kowloon in the late 1950s.

Many thanks,

Tony Lee.

Childhood memories of Hong Kong in the late 1950s

My father was posted to Hong Kong Naval Base in 1956 to lead the work associated with Gyro Compasses. As a three year old, I travelled with my Mother, Father and seven year old sister on the P&O ship The Chusan, leaving Southampton on 28th December 1956 and returning two years later (instead of three), due to the closure of the dockyard. Given my young age at that time my own memories are very limited, and my parents and sister have now died.
