How to get there when you don't know where to go

Last week we introduced the new Places feature. They help you find your way to a place in Hong Kong.

That's great if you know where you want to get to. But what if you've just got a vague idea? eg 'I expect to be working in Central, which serviced apartments are nearby?'. Or "I'm staying in a hotel on Nathan Road, any friendly pubs nearby?".

Trading Places

What's your favourite place, and how do you let others know about it?

I've been thinking about how to make it easy to share a place: write a few short notes about it, show where it is on a map, and save it to the web. I've had a first try at making this work, and would like your help to try it and let me know any problems you find.

Hong Kong Wear 1950s

Hi i am creating a theatre show about HK in the 1950s-1960s. Wondering if anyone knows what was the common clothing at the time? I am dealing mainly with the lower/working classes. thanks!

Old bottles

My walks all seem to be heading down memory lane at the moment. Today's took me past an old squatter area, and I saw a glass bottle sticking out of the earth. It had probably been thrown out some years before - not antique, but a few decades old.

Hong Kong border in the 1950s

I was wondering if anyone might have a photo or be able to describe what it was like at the border crossing between Hong Kong and the mainland in the 1950s. I have some idea from Elsie Tu’s book, "Shouting at the Mountain". I gather from her husband’s story that there was a small bridge at the checkpoint on the Shenzhen River at that time. I wondered what it might have looked like. How many guards were there etc.

Pillbox on Chung Hom Kok beach

Although we're regular visitors to Chung Hom Kok beach, it was only this weekend that I noticed there's an old wartime pillbox over at the far end of the beach.

Here's the view along the beach, looking past the end of the second bbq-pit area.

Where to find Hong Kong's history

Here are some ideas of where to look if you're interested in Hong Kong's history.

A walk through Victoria Barracks

A couple of weeks ago we traced the history of the Admiralty area, and saw how the land between Kennedy Road and Queensway used to be the British army’s Victoria Barracks. This time we’ll take a walk through what used to be the barracks, to see what’s there today. There are also a few questions along the way, that I hope you can help me with.

Why is Admiralty different?

Do you know that pointy junction on the edge of Wanchai? The one where Hennessy Road and Queen's Rd East merge and become Queensway? This one:

Come stand there with me for a moment, and look towards Admiralty. Notice anything different?
