Chapter 8 : Ida, Su Yin, the light of Tin Hau, and the wrath of Yen Lo

Repulse Bay gets its first mention. As does the Repulse Bay Hotel.

HK Observatory is observed from the Mount Austin apartments with a signal 1 typhoon warning hoisted. He then describes the events of Typhoon Ida on 27 August 1954.

His mother met with Governer Grantham at Government House.

Chapter 7 : Living on clouds

This chapter concerns Booths move to the Peak and contains the most locations referenced within a single chapter in the book, so bear with me.

The chapter starts off with a car trip to the new residence at Apartment 8, Block A, Mount Austin Mansions. The drive goes via the Yau Ma Tei vehicular ferry up to Magazine Gap before getting onto Mount Austin Road.

Chapter 6 : Dens, ducks, and dives

Quite a few places mentioned here.

This is the chapter when the family move from the Fourseas Hotel (we have established this as being the current site of the Metropark Kowloon Hotel) to rented accommodation at 133 Boundary Street.

In the vicinity of the new residence was the original La Salle college, a well known local school.

Chapter 5 : Firecrackers, funerals, and flames

Booth notes that behind the Fourseas Hotel:

"across the road from the rear of the Fourseas was a pro-Communist secondary school which occupied a triangular plot between Emma, Julia and Soares Avenues"

The triangular plot is still there, but the school has long gone and the space is occupied by a residential block called "Wing Ying Mansions".

Chapter 4 : Three lives on the edge

This is another chapter that is low on locations.

Hing Loon on Hankow Rd is mentioned again.

Liberty Avenue is mentioned with reference to the old lady - Queen of Kowloon. It is between Peace and Victory Avenues off Waterloo Road.

Old Bank of China Building is also mentioned as being the tallest building in Asia (remember, this is 1952/53).

Chapter 3 : Sei Hoi Jau Dim

"Sei Hoi Jau Dim" stood at 75 Waterloo Road, by the street number it would seem that this location is now occupied by the Metropark Kowloon Hotel.

"."..across the road was a steep bare dome of a hillside rising about a hundred feet from the street. It contained a deep fissure..."

Although remnants of a hill can still be seen, most of it has been hacked away and built upon.

Other places mentioned in this chapter:

Chapter 2 : The Fragrant Harbour

Additional information about Chapter 2.

Chapter 1 : Port Out

The first chapter doesn't really have much until the very end, and even then it is observations rather than places he actually visits.

Initially he mentions seeing a small village next to a golf course (we believe it is most likely to be Shek O).

Martin Booth's 'Golden Boy' : Further information

If you enjoyed reading Martin Booth's memoir, Golden Boy (published as 'Gweilo' in some markets), here is a place to find & contribute extra information about the places and lifestyle he describes. We've divided it by chapter, so just click on the chapter you're interested in for more information.

Some other old Hong Kong photos on the net

Hi there,

Bumped into this blog earlier.  Despite it is entirely written in Chinese, this blog has quite a load of local old photos.  Thee are nine sections in total.  The link pasted below is the last section.  Owing to the way the photos are organized, it would take quite a while for all the photos to be loaded.

Best Regards,

T
