When were the Harrison Forman photos taken?

The library records for these photos show the date of each photograph as 'circa 1941'. We now believe the photos were taken in at least two batches: one during Sep - Nov 1940, and one in Sep 1941.

Raymond Lo has helped us pinpoint the dates for several photos, based on cinema advertisments that can be seen. The first group date the photos between Sep - Nov 1940:

Pok Fu Lam Bunkers

Last week I had a mooch around Pok Fu Lam reservoir and came upon some bunkers. As you first walk into the reservoir you go past a badly damaged bunker, before you reach the public toilets there is a rubbish bin, behind which is a set of stairs leading up to these bunkers.

Attaching a Photo

Hi There,

I would like to add a couple of photos I've found when I was trawling through my computer.

A better way to locate photos

We've made some changes so that it's easier to give photos a location. That in turn will make it easier to search for photos that you are interested in.

What it is

If you look at a photo (the software we use to run this site calls them 'images'), you'll now see a new section 'Places shown in this photo:'. And, ta-da, it is followed by a list of the places you can see in the photo.

Similarly, if you look at a place, you'll see a new section 'Photos that show this place', which ... well, you know already.

Jingles (Gingle's) Restaurant, 70 Nathan Road, kowloon

It must have been around the early/mid fifties as I was just a wee feller, but on saturday mornings, after shopping we used to go to 'Jingles', which Judging from the address was on the corner of Nathan and Humphries avenue. A few things stick in my mind; Jingles was a huge amiable American guy who needed two of his cafeteria's metal chairs to support his considerable weight. As a child I was totally mesmerised by the flashing lights and music from the Wurlitzer juke box and the amazing vanilla milkshakes.

Pre-war buildings

On Flickr, DBHKer has a good collection of present-day photos of old (pre-war) buildings that still stand in Hong Kong. Each photo has a brief description of the building attached.

Other photo-sets from this user are of British colonial architecture in other places.
