New Grading

anyone else been checking out the amo's new grading of buildings? Pretty impressed so far, if it means Grade 1 buildings are no unlikely to be torn down. Also amazing how poor the grading was before: the old Bank of China building in Central wasn't graded at all before, neither was the Peninsula.

There's a ton of sites listed, almost all with photos (military sites on stonecutters are coyly omitted from pics)

Here's the link. The list of sites and photos open on separate pages.

Photos of Old Houses

When I lived in HK in the 70s, I remember seeing a few large, old, castle-like houses that people lived in. In the mid-levels, for example. I would love to find photos of these if anyone knows of any. I'm sure they're all gone now but they seemed wonderful and very mysterious. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Talk this Friday: Solomon Bard Remembers

Internet searches about Hong Kong's history often turn up books by Solomon Bard, so I'm pleased to see there's a chance to hear him speak this Friday. He was born in 1916, and has packed so much into his long life that there is certainly no shortage of material. Here are the details of the talk, hosted by the Royal Asiatic Society:

Speaker: Dr Solomon Bard
Date/Time: Friday 20 March, 6.30 pm
Venue: 8th Floor, City Hall High Block, Central
Booking: This lecture is free and open to the public, with no booking required

Harrison Forman photos - request for help

I'd like to make the photos easier to see and comment on, and also link them in to the Places we've created here. I've set up the framework, now comes the task of importing them. There are 17 pages of photos, and each one takes 20-30 minutes to import. So I'm hoping to get some help!

If you can help process one page, here are the steps to follow:

Finds and Discoveries in HK

I thought I’d start up a new forum dedicated to “Finds & Discovery’s in HK”. For anything people have found laying around.

I’ll start with the story of my mother, who still lives here in HK.

Views along the tram line in the 1950s

In chapter 9 of Martin Booth's book, he describes a tram ride from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan.

Here are the photos we've been sent that show the views he'd have seen along that route.

Who can tell me if this bridge is in HK?

Route 19 - HK Mainland Defence Ruins

Places to see along Route 19, from the book 'A Travel of Hong Kong Mainland Defence Ruins (World War II)'.

If you want to add a new Place to the map for this Route,  use the 'Create content / Place' link at the bottom of the menu on your left to create the Place, and remember to add the tag 'R19-HKMDR' so that it shows up on the map.

218 Nathan Rd.

I remember that Block from my childhood days. I recall that there was a 'Livingstone Tailors' at the north end of the block and , in winter, there was nearly always a chestnut vendor with his brazier on the corner of Tak Shing St. and Nathan Rd. Into the next block, between Tak Shing St. and Austin Rd.
