Air Raid Shelter at RAF Kai Tak

Prior to the outbreak of WWII, air raid shelter(s) were built at RAF Kai Tak. I recall there was also an RAF Battery in the hills close to where the MTR comes out of the Choi Hung Tunnel towards Kowloon Bay, now the site of apartment blocks. This photo taken in 1951 shows an air raid shelter beside the boundary fence facing Kwun Tong Rd opposite the Officers' Mess. The Mess and adjacent buildings from the 1930s are still standing today. As for the shelter, I doubt very much it is still around.

Hong Kong's 'shelter areas'

Along stage 2 of the Wilson Trail, you'll pass a strange collection of eight low, brick platforms [1]. Each has a concrete top with 8 circular holes – 4 large and 4 medium size. Further on you'll pass a similar single platform, with just two holes cut in the top.

The information board by the single platform suggests they were built in 1938/39 as cooking stoves (the round holes are just the right size right for a wok), as part of a plan to feed the people of Shau Kei Wan in time of war. Photos on the internet refer to them as the 'japanese stoves', suggesting they were built during the Japanese occupation. From what I can find, neither explanation is quite right.

Hong Kong before Reclaimation

Hi there,

I'm trying to find a detailed map of Hong Kong before land reclaimation began. I've been to the government maps office and they couldn't really help!

Does anyone happen to know which roads run along the old coastline please? I've always been interested to find out just how much reclaimation there has been.

 Many Thanks for your help.

 Anthony
