Our last photo from the album shows these two buildings on a hilltop. The site also has a grim story attached, but our album owner couldn’t have known that as the events didn’t take place until the 1940s.

Back to 1929, and where was this taken? We’ve obviously left mid-levels behind as we’re at the top of a hill. I drew a blank, and asked readers on the Gwulo website for their help. Regular contributor Moddsey pointed me to the

I wonder if anyone can tell me the author of the poem Come to the Peak ha! ha! apparently about the bird the francolin?And the title of any anthology it was published in?The poem was written around the time of World War 1. I have not been able to find out anything about it via Google.

Q&A

Q. When will the orders be mailed out?

A. The original delivery date was 24 November, but printing has gone very smoothly and yesterday I heard the good news that the books will be delivered this Friday, 13 November. We'll get to work packing and mailing your orders as soon as the books arrive.

 

Q. So will they arrive in time for Christmas?

A.1 All Hong Kong orders will arrive before Christmas.

A.2 Most Overseas orders will arrive before Christmas. Though airmail was suspended for a while due to COVID-19, it has been restored to most countries, including Australia, UK, and USA. You can check if airmail is available to your country in the latest "Types of services currently available to overseas destinations" document on the Hongkong Post website.

For countries where airmail services are still suspended, e.g. Canada or New Zealand, your order will be sent by surface mail, typically taking 7-10 weeks to arrive.

Where: The building on the right was home to the Mercantile Bank of India, It stood on the corner of Queen's Road Central (QRC), which heads off into the distance on the left, and Ice House Street, exiting to the right.

 

What: The ornately decorated sedan chair would be hired to carry

Hong Kong Colonial Report 1909

i have a copy of this "Colonial Report" (https://digital.soas.ac.uk/LOAC000066/00103/1x), but couldn't find any website to describe who/why these reports were printed. would anyone know their purpose? 

this isn't the same as the "Blue Book", is it? scanned copies for other former british colonies can be found online as well

Pillbox numbering system

It seems that some of those PBs on HK island share the same numbers, whereas those on the mainland don't have their numbers repeated. 

Are those numbers given to the PBs by the relevant government offices, or are they named in some other way?

pretty weird to describe your defense system in details...maybe they were trying to scare away potential invaders?
