Looking for any photos of old Portuguese neighborhood 1850 -1950

Hello,

I'm looking for any 1850-1950 photos of the old Portuguese neighborhood in HK. Streets would include Bridges Street, Caine Road, Rozario Street, Tank Lane, and the surrounding area.

Thanks,
Allison Neves

Masonic burials

In her book “Forgotten Souls. A Social History of the Hong Kong Cemetery”, Patricia Lim devotes a whole chapter to the History of the Free Masons in Hong Kong. She reckons that about eighty headstones in the cemetery carry the masonic symbol of compasses and set square. She includes a description of a masonic funeral as follows:

1937 Public Works Department Annual Report

A copy of the original is available at HKGRO: https://lib.hku.hk/hkgro/view/a1937/1017.pdf

Austin Sevens in Hong Kong (post war)

I very much enjoyed reading the postings on Gwulo connected with Peter Crush's old Austin 7. I remember Peter driving the car around Hong Kong, the publicity generated when he put it up for auction and also when it featured in the parade of old cars involved in the opening of the first cross-harbour tunnel. It is good to know that it has been restored by David Harrison and I wish him many years of happy motoring in it

New on Gwulo: 2021, week 2

A look at what's new on the Gwulo website ...

General

  • 2021 started with an interview by the Apple Daily newspaper, chatting about running Gwulo, collecting old photos, and whether it's possible to making a living out of it! Here's the video of the interview:

Than here's the accompanying Chinese article, plus a copy translated into English by Google Translate. The article introduced Gwulo to many new readers - if that includes you, welcome to Gwulo!

  • Animal visitors: IDJ has posted newspaper clippings about sightings of tigers, more tigersand whales in Hong Kong in 1936.

  • Notes & photos of the 1927 Typhoon

  • Klaus found several Pathe films of Hong Kong scenes from 1968.

  • Older readers may remember The Railway Tavern in Tai Wai:

While younger readers may remember riding on this miniature railway:
    Shek-Kong-Airfield-Carnival-Miniature railway

Peter Crush, a.k.a. Chinarail, was the owner of both, and tells us some of their stories.

British Pathé Films from 1968

On Youtube are two films (or actually cuts) from Hong Kong in 1968. A bit messy, but very interesting.

Scots Guard Second Battalion Regimental Emblem (1927), Fanling

On Monday 23 November 2020, I saw the Scots Guard 2nd Battalion Emblem in Hong Kong (1927), unveiled after a hill fire.

There was a construction contract near the area.

Would the Emblem be repaired, preserved and maintained?

Free Gwulo talk over Zoom this Friday, 15 Jan 2021

This Friday I'll present the talk "Photographs of Old Hong Kong and the Tales They Tell: Volume 4", showing some of the photos that went into Volume 4 of my books, and telling their stories.

The talk is hosted by the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong Branch, who have kindly opened it up to Gwulo's readers to attend.

Union Theological Seminary, Canton vs. Canton Christian College

Hello,

I need help in deciphering the difference between what was called the "Union Theological Seminary" in Canton, and the "Canton Christian College", named as such until 1927 when it became Lingnan University.  I have not been able to identify the attached photos that is labelled "Union Theological Seminary, Canton".  Does this institution still exist or did it merge with Canton Christian College?  Your. assistance is welcome.  Thank you!
