Warships in Double Haven

I have heard that the RN used Double Haven as an anchorage right up to WW2. If anyone can verify this, and - even better - if they have a photo, please get in touch.

I have also heard that this was the reason for the amazing level of detail of soundings on the Admiralty Chart # 3544 1904-06 - give the young swabbies something to do, over and over again!

Are there any forum members from this community? Perhaps students at La Salle, Tack Ching, or belonging to the. Saint Teresa's parish?

I am a son/Nephew of those who were in there communities. Would like to learn more.

Delivering raindrops from Tai Mo Shan to the Governor's teapot

This week's story begins like many on Gwulo: seeing something new on a walk and thinking, "That's a bit odd ..."

We'd just walked uphill from the lower Shing Mun Reservoir, and noticed there was a large metal pipe running alongside the path. When the path levelled out the pipe ended abruptly, pouring water out into a concrete channel.

The channel is a short one, soon disappearing into a tunnel in the hillside.

It seems odd to have a pipe pouring water into a channel like this - why not just continue the pipeline? And where does the water go to after it enters the tunnel?

The next part of the walk followed what had looked like a catchwater on the map, but it raised more questions. It must have taken significant work to build the catchwater, so why has it been allowed to fill up with the sand and gravel that had washed in? And why was there a concrete barrier across it, separating it from the channel to the tunnel?

I turned to the

THE COLONY’S WATERWORKS.

This is a transcript of a speech given by Governor Clementi to Legco on 5 September 1929, talking about the work to provide a reliable supply of water to Hong Kong's residents. He looks back at Hong Kong's earlier efforts, and forward to plans for the near future, giving us a good summary of Hong Kong's water supply in its first 100 years as a British colony. I've added the headings in bold.

Scottish Masonic Quadrille Association

The Calico Ball held by the Scottish Masonic Quadrille Association on 3rd April 1907 was the final of the Association’s monthly dances and was reported in all the newspapers. Miss Olson, (Nellie), the youngest and only unmarried daughter of my great-grandfather, John Olson, took part dressed as a “Spanish dancer”. I imagine this interestingly named Association was linked to the Lodge of St.
