Gwulo in 2021

It's time for the annual round up of what happened on the Gwulo website in 2020, and a look ahead to some big changes planned for 2021.

2020 Review

1. How did the website grow in 2020?

I'm happy to see there was steady growth throughout the year, plus occasional bursts of new visitors from events like the Apple Daily interview.

In more detail...

1.1 Contributors

A strong community of contributors is essental for a site like to Gwulo to thrive.

Looking at the number of people posting comments to Gwulo, it increased from 413 people in 2019 to 549 in 2020. That's a good sign, showing new contributors joining us to record Hong Kong's history.

Here are the most active commenters in 2020:

1.2 Gwulo.com - new features

Later in 2021, I plan to spend time adding new features to the site. Here are some of my early ideas. I'll also welcome your input - please leave a comment below with your thoughts.

NB These are just ideas. I can guarantee not all of them will be implemented!

A. Better ways to navigate lots of content

Back in 2010 there just over 4,000 pages on Gwulo. We ended 2020 with over 44,000 pages. Are there ways to make it easier for visitors to find what they want?

The Catholic Club

Have I missed information on the Catholic Club? Is there a photo of it around the 1920s? I ask because my grandfather, Charles Warren had a debenture in it when he died in 1923 and it was probably where he went to socialise. I'd be grateful for dates and an address and any other information about it.

Seeking information on early HK photographer

Hi. I am helping my husband in his photographic research and we have reached a dead end. I am hoping that someone on this Forum might be able to help.

A curious scene

This is the only photo I have in my collection with a 'Year Of The Ox' theme. I'm still trying to work out what was happening when the photographer took it.

Obviously there's a cow walking across the scene, but how do the two men with the shoulder pole and basket fit into the story?

Orphanages 1900

Do you know which orphanages were open in Hong Kong in 1900? My grand mothe Elizabeth Alice Grimble and her 3 siblings were orphaned in 1900 when their father (Joseph Robert Grimble) died and we believe they entered an orphanage. We would therefore like to see if there are any records of them.

Brick & Cement Manufacturing in HK Circa 1900

Hi,

I'm looking at the History of Bishop Hill underground reservoir, which has been in the news recently following a local community intervention to demoltion works (Link - https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/society/article/3115849/century-old-...).

What was Hong Kong like in the early 1960s and late 1950s?

I want to start by thanking you all for creating such a fascinating and insightful website. My grandmother lived in Hong Kong until she moved to England in 1960 or 61 when she was 20. She has been back to HK many times for holidays, but laments that she wishes she had stayed there. Of course I don’t mention that I wouldn’t have been born if she had stayed (I’m half Chinese and half white British)!
