Cicely Beatrice Dangerfield Warren née Taylor was born on 10 February 1901 in Aston, Birmingham. She married Leslie Beal Warren in West Bromwich in 1922,  while he was articled to the architect Arthur Edwards. Leslie arrived in Hong Kong with his new wife in May, 1923, a month before the death of his father, Charles Edward Warren. It was intended that he would take over the running of the family company, C.E. Warren & Co. Ltd, but not so soon. The couple moved into 19 Broadwood Road, a large bungalow that Charles Warren had built in the grounds of his house, The Towers, for his friend, the Wesleyan missionary doctor, Dr Webb Anderson, for his furloughs from Fat Shan hospital. Webb Anderson, whom Charles Warren had nominated as a guardian for the Warren children on the event of his death, let or lent the bungalow to the young Warren family, which by the summer of 1924 included Leslie’s two younger brothers, previously at school in England.

Cicely and Leslie lived at 19 Broadwood Road from 1924 to 1938. Fearing further trouble after the Japanese attack on Canton, where C.E. Warren & Co. Ltd. had a branch office, Leslie sent Cicely and their two children back to England in 1938. He himself died in the Burma campaign in May 1943, having moved to Penang in mid-1941. Cicely emigrated to Canada and worked in Toronto for many years. She died there in July 1970.

Cicely’s photographs include other Broadwood Road families from the 1920s and 1930s, the Whiteleys, the Walkers, the Dransfields and the Hewitts, some of which I have posted. The photos here show some of the several pre-war family snaps taken at Stanley Beach.

Thankyou for the information and photos you have posted! I've been researching my family tree, of which Cicely Warren (Nee Taylor) was my grandad's cousin, and am always grateful to find such informative stories online. Now I know why I could not find many records available for her and her family.

Glad the information about my uncle’s wife, Cicely Warren, was useful. Could I ask you if you know anything about Cicely’s sister, Dorrie Peace? I’d also love to know more about Cicely’s father and wider family. I have many photos of Cicely in Hong Kong taken between 1923 and 1938. I’ve posted several on Gwulo apart from the ones above – for instance “Cicely&pram”; “Big_Wave_Bay”; “Beach pyjamas”. If you’d like more information about Cicely’s later life, please ask David Bellis - david@gwulo.com - for my email address.
