Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked at Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC), with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tientsin (Tianjin), Rotterdam and London. At the start of the company, in 1903, Willem Kien (1877-1970) started to work for HCHC in Shanghai, later becoming director. In 1921 he left China and became director at the Rotterdam head office.

Star Ferry Pier, Central - 1937

The original caption under this photograph reads : : On the right is shown the pier in the harbour of Hongkong where the launch was moored when its boiler exploded causing the deaths of 35 persons" 

This was one illustration within a ten-page article by Professor C. A Middleton Smith about the need for more supervision of engineering and mechanization in Hong Kong and China

Douglas Wharf was a T-shaped pier that stood at the (post 1866) praya on (todays) Des Voeux Road with the junction of Chiu Lung Street.

It was part of a shipyard that was owned by Douglas Lapraik situated off Queen's Road (Wikipedia).

Appears destroyed on a photo of the 1874 typhoon .

Shows both Queen's Piers. 

The harbour in front of the older Queen's Pier is not yet reclaimed yet, there will be the Star Ferry Pier (3rd location) in about three year's time.

Temporary Servicemen's Pier (Wanchai) [1964-????]

Temporary servicemen's pier at Harcourt Road in front of Caine House. This was probably used when Fenwick Pier was damaged by typhoon Ruby (September 1964).

Wikipedia reports:

  • 1964: The Pier had to be rebuilt after typhoons Wanda and Ruby dealt severe blows to the building.
  • 1965: The rebuilt Pier opened in June.

Possibly this temporary pier was in service for less than a year, maybe longer.

Think the chimney belongs to the Oriental Sugar Refinery. Morrisson Hill in the back.

This photo is almost the same as this one (Victoria Barracks 1870s), but it extends to both sides.
