Field Cottage was the headquarters of the Hong Kong Flying Club.

Kai Tak-runway 13-extension pad

Closer to the runway’s threshold, the extension appears to have consisted of rectangular blocks, presumably of concrete?

Included in the 1958 runway documentary film is this pilot’s view of the short extension that crossed the main road.

What is not clear is how airliners manouvered onto the extension before take-off.

Taxy on in a forward direction then turn themselves around with propellors turning at high-speed to give the aircraft enough momentum to turn in a tight circle, or be backed on by an aircraft-tug/tractor? <Read more ...>

The components of this image were taken in 1997 using a basic roll-film camera without automatic focusing, or a film-transport motor-drive or auto-light metering.

It was mounted on a heavy tripod.

The individual negatives have recently been scanned and joined by software.

It is displayed here at low resolution to enable it to fit onto Gwulo.
