The Morning Star, June 1974

Here is a rather nice shot of the 'Morning Star', taken in June 1974, with the 'Northern Star' nearby.

Star Ferry,1972

I already posted this same photo, but this is a newly digitized scan of the old negative I just had done-the results are dramatically better than the printer scans of the old photos I had been doing-I'm going to send out a lot of my old photos for "freshening up"

Where HK island is just a blur in the old photo scan, this one is quite sharp and clear-note the Peak terminal just under the eaves of the Star Ferry building. This photo was taken in July of 1972

Here is another recently scanned photo from the original negative-what a difference in quality to the old, faded photos I scanned on my printer a while back-this one is sharp and crisp, looking like it was just taken yesterday. Seeing how early in the evening it was, I must have taken this one, and then walked a short way down Lockhart to the San Francisco to have a drink (or two). By the time I came out of there, it was getting dark, and I took the last photo on the roll looking back down the street from in front of the SF (that would be the damaged photo I just posted)

Here is a badly damaged negative I had digitized, for the 'historical interest'. This shot was at the very end of the roll of film, and a careless developer just stapled something right over this shot. I never had this photo printed, but recently I sent a bunch of negatives to a place that scans them and sends them back on a DVD disk.

What a shame this one is so damaged. I took it on Lockhart Road in Wanchai, in the early evening, when the lights were just coming on in the bars (you can still see the sunlight up at the roofline)

Here is another photo I just had digitized from the negative. I took this from the Star Ferry, and you can see the Furama Hotel under construction. I can remember being quite fascinated to pass by construction sites, and see all the bamboo scaffolding.

Where is this?

Recently, I was looking at my old negatives from my HK trip, and realized that I had not had all of them printed back in '72 when I got home (they were Sakura film which I had to send away to get printed). I took this shot somewhere in HK for sure (it is sandwiched between two harbor shots), but I have no idea where,or why I took it. I'm sure someone here will recognize this place from July,1972

I'm a packrat-I save useless ephemera from long-ago trips. In dredging up my memories of my '72 HK trip, I found this card. When I got to the airport, I had no idea where I was going to stay, and the cabdriver took me here. It actually turned out to be a rather pleasant place-certainly not fancy, but more that adequate for me. In looking at Streetview, It looks to still be there, if under the name "Princess". This seems to be one of the very few places in HK that are more or less the same as they were in 1972 when I was there.

Yet another pic from my NT tour. I suppose this is just about the only thing I took a photo of in HK that hasn't changed since then.

Harbour View, 1972

Here's another view of the harbour, taken around July 9th,1972. While I was there, that small US Carrier pulled in, and the Wanchai places I had been hanging about in were suddenly flooded with Sailors. Tropical Storm Susan was approaching, and those ships quickly pulled out. After that, I practically had the whole place to myself down there.

This is the last of the pics I took in 1972. If this was now, I'd have taken jillions of pics without a care, but film wasn't really cheap anywhere, and my funds were running a bit low by the time I got here (I'd been in Japan), so something really had to stand out in my eyes to take a photo by then.
