Gas Works-Office at Shanghai and Jordan 1930

China Lghts and Gas Company Ltd gas works on the northwest corner of Jordan Road and Shanghai Street.  The photo was taken likely from the roof top on Battary Street looking to the east and Shanghai Street.  According to the 1956 map, the building on the left was an office.

Coronation 12th May 1937 First Day Cover

This first day cover for the 1937 Coronation was sent to John Edward Barrow (my great-uncle) at the China Light and Power Company premises on Tai Wan Road in the Hung Hom area.  He worked at the Hok Un power station from 1921 to 1938.  In 1938 he returned to England in view of the changing political situation.  Many of his friends who stayed in Hong Kong did not survive the war years.

Advert from the Hong Kong Volunteers Year Book 1935-1936

It suggests sending biscuit gift parcels back ‘Home’, but Peak Frean was a well-known biscuit manufacturer back ‘Home’ in the UK, as it was known by the ‘homesick.’

Surely the biscuits were not shipped to Hong Kong, and then parcelled back to the UK again by ship? The perishable product could hardly have survived the double journey by sea.
