Bella Southorn to Alexander Laihovetsky, letter 1, 1932

Date picture taken (to nearest decade for older photos):
1932

Bella Southorn was the wife of the Colonial Secretary during the Peel governorship.

I gather the Empire Products Fair was a forerunner of the HK Agricultural Society shows in the New Territories which I remember from the 1950s.

Captain Alexander Laihovetsky lived in HK from about 1919-42, apart from a period in the 1920s when he took his family to Canada chicken-farming - probably the reason he came to be considered an "expert" on chickens. He even kept chickens on his ship.

In front of Braemar Terrace photo taken 1934, ' I'm the king of the castle' ! When living at number 7, I was playing 'Catch' with my older brother Eric and he closer a glass door on my approach and my right hand and arm went through it! I recall being rushed to the hospital at Causeway Bay with a towel full of blood and being on the operating table for stitches. To this day, the scars are still evident, one of my nine lives! I saw whirlpools when the chloroform was being administered.

Have finally found the date of the typhoon damage to the wall between 19 Broadwood Road, home to Leslie Warren and his family, and no. 20, The Towers, which can just be seen on the left. It is 24 July 1930. The annual report of the Botanical & Forestry Department provides a good record of the number of times the typhoon signal was hoisted and the worst typhoon of each year, if any.

With brother Eric taken about 1933/34. The registration number "40" of the family car could pin point the year. A car was probably necessary to reach Braemar Terrace a hilly climb.

This photo from the Warren family collection has no legend. It would be the same era as the photo of Veronica Walker's birthday party in the 1930s. The children may be other Broadwood Road children or from one of the schools. The windows of the house aren't the same as those of The Towers and the stonework isn't the same as Quarry Bay School. Is there a clue in the older boy's socks? Are they school uniform socks? The shoes may also help to date the picture. The children have borrowed their parents' pith helmets for the photo.

As with the previous photo that I posted, I'm unsure of the reason for this photo taken by a member of the Warren family. It appears to focus on a part of the hillside. I can't make out if the structure is a building or a retaining wall. The only large 30s building project, in which CE Warren & Co. Ltd participated, as far as I'm aware, was Eucliffe Castle. I don't know if this photo shows the relevant site. Any ideas very welcome.
