Dates and location approximate for now. It appears in photos of the area from the 1940s on. IDJ writes:

That whole area was covered with Nissen Huts and military playing fields up until at least the 1970s and probably until about the time the first Cross Harbour Tunnel was built.

Tung Chung Wooden Pier/Bridge at Ma Wan Chung Village [????- ]

Hi there,

From my observation the pier/bridge had once collasped, but villagers had laid on new planks.  I wished I had took some photos more than 30 years ago when I was there in a school picnic.

Blake Pier was built on Connaught Road at the end of Pedder Street, and opened in 1900. The Report of the Director of Public Works for 1900 said:

War Memorial Nursing Home / Royal Navy Hospital / BMH Mount Kellett [1932-1975]

The War Memorial Nursing Home opened on this site on Wednesday, 16th March 1932 [1].

Despite the name, in its early years it was a civilian hospital. The name referred to the fund that commemorated the people who fought in WW1, and which contributed to the costs of building this hospital.

After WW2, the Royal Navy Hospital in Wanchai was considered in too poor condition to be re-used. So the War Memorial Hospital was taken over by the Navy, and became the new Royal Navy Hospital.
